INDIVIDUAL CUSTOMIZED MODULES

 

§         HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION

o       Prepare/Review the 4-year high school plan and selecting classes

o       Explain the high school transcript, GPA, Class Rank

o       Discussion on high school activities (in and out of school and volunteer work)

o       Explanation of college tests- ACT, SAT, SAT II and discussion about possibility of test prep classes

o       Detailed college timeline for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

 

   

§         COLLEGE OVERVIEW

o       Thorough explanation of colleges today – differences between colleges, degrees, environments, admission standards, cultures

o       Demystify the college process and terminology

o       Discussion of what to look for in a college and what colleges look for in a student

o       Detailed college timeline for freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors

o       Discussion of differences in college deadlines and admission decisions

o       Schedule to meet with college representatives and attending college fairs and programs

 

 

§         STUDENT EVALUATION

o       Critical review of individual student’s transcript, GPA, class rank, test scores, selected courses, activities, recommendations and other essential information

o       Discussion of student’s collegiate goals, interests, abilities, values, and passions that may guide the college process

o       Administer career interest survey/assessment and interviews with a results analysis

o       Identify college characteristics that are important

o       Family expectations

 

 

§         COLLEGE SEARCH PROCESS

(This workshop is combined with the Student Evaluation)

o       Completion of an individual college search survey

o       Review overall objectives of the college search process

o       A preliminary search of appropriate colleges and universities

o       Direction on how to research the pool of potential colleges and universities

o       Narrow down choices to 6-10 definite college choices including reach, target, and safe schools

o       Research the departments within each college

 

 

§         COLLEGE VISITS AND TOURS

o       Explain the purpose of college visits and tours

o       Timing of college visits, information sessions and tours

o       Review what to look for while on your college visit and tour

o       Discuss the questions to ask during your stay

o       Provide  a map outline of road trips to visit colleges including phone numbers and distances between schools

 

 

§         PREPARING COMPETITIVE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

o       Review the essentials of completing a college application

o       Awareness of the mechanics of completing the college application

o       Develop and implement the plan for each college application

o       Inclusion of transcript, test scores, resume, essay, letters of recommendation, school report form

o       Importance of scheduling auditions, portfolios, special materials for specialty schools

o       Assist with the draft completion of one application and a detailed review of this college application

 

 

§         COLLEGE ESSAY EDITING

o       Explain the importance of the college essay

o       Follow the essential elements of the college essay

o       Research the specific college essay questions for each school and brainstorming possible college essay topics

o       Focus on the importance of the college essay being your own

o       Review one essay carefully for clarity of expression, voice, style, and grammatical accuracy

 

 

§         RESUME POSSIBILITIES AND DEVELOPMENT

o       Research resume samples and options

o       Develop a resume that reflects you personally, your high school academics, your activities and your life experiences

o       Prepare a resume which may be specific to each university

 

 

§         INTERVIEW PREPARATION AND TECHNIQUES

o       Differentiate between the different types of interviews

o       Discuss possible interview questions

o       Review interviewing tips to keep in mind

o       Reduce anxiety around the interview

 

 

§         FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIP FUNDAMENTALS

o       Detail costs associated with college enrollment

o       Explain the history and purpose of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

o       Explain the need analysis process and EFC (Estimated Family Contribution)

o       Review the CSS (College Scholarship Service) PROFILE

o       Distinguish between need and merit based aid, loans, grants, and the different types of scholarships

o       Educate on different scholarship searches available, deadlines, and application process

o       Brainstorm possible questions for financial aid officers

 

§         NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE FOR ATHLETES

o       Educate on the NCAA Clearinghouse purpose

o       Review all criteria and requirements including GPA, course selection and test scores

o       Compare individual course selections with the high school approved core courses (48-H) for eligibility

o       Complete the NCAA Clearinghouse application and submitting to required institutions

 

§         PARENT’S LETTING GO

o       Awareness of feelings and thoughts that may occur

o       Listening and discussing issues that will be faced by families

o       Providing counseling and support

o       Creating ideas and suggestions that will help through this change
